Today’s Devotional: Light In The Darkness
Monday, December 1
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” Isaiah 9:2
Darkness is a fitting picture of our world without Jesus. Before Christ, humanity wandered without hope and without truth. An example of this is the treatment of women. In the Roman world, a husband could legally kill his wife for adultery or abandon her whenever he wanted. A woman could also be forced into marriage or divorce. Women had almost no legal protections and were often treated as commodities.
Jesus treated women with honor and compassion. The Bible teaches that husbands must love their wives. Infidelity and abuse is forbidden. Many women in the early church were rescued from prostitution or abusive relationships.
In many Roman families, a girl was considered an economic burden and discarded at birth. The early church would rescue these abandoned babies and raise them as their own. The Christian ethic began reshaping entire legal structures, granting women protections and dignity unheard of in the ancient world. The same could be said of slaves, children, etc. All of this is because our Savior came.
“Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” Isaiah wrote these words 700 years before Jesus was born and it is certainly true. When Jesus came, He declared, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). He didn’t just bring the light, but He IS the Light. Darkness does not get the last word.
As you drive around and look at Christmas lights this year, remember the Light that broke through the darkness. The Light of Christ pierced the gloom of sin, shame, confusion and spiritual blindness. He fills us with His hope, peace and joy.
⸻
Reflection:
• Where do you feel the weight of “darkness” in your life right now?
• How can you walk in the Light of Christ this Christmas season?
• Who in your life needs to see the light of Jesus shine through you (in words, compassion, love)?
Prayer:
Thank You for sending Jesus, the Light of the World. Give me hope, courage, and joy as I follow You. Help me reflect Your light to others this Christmas. In Jesus’ name, amen.

See you tomorrow!
