Today’s Devotional: The Promise of a Child
Tuesday, December 2
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder … Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end.” Isaiah 9:6–7
God promised that a child would be born. He didn’t promise a man or a politician, but a baby. But what can a baby do? When Isaiah wrote this, there was a lot of uncertainty. There were threats from other nations, unfaithful kings and spiritual darkness. Yet into that uncertainty came the promise of a child. This was unexpected. They needed a warrior, an emperor, a Caesar … but a baby?
In the promise of a baby, we see the sure, unshakeable power of God. It’s not hard for him. OF HIS GOVERNMENT there will be no end. The light of His Kingdom is spreading and you can’t stop it. Every king, prime minster, celebrity and nation must bow their knee at the feet of Jesus.
When we see nativity scenes, it’s a reminder that God keeps His promises. He sent His Son. His government will cover the whole earth. “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea” (Habakkuk 2:14). A new light has dawned. There will be no more darkness.
God works in unexpected ways. A child was the answer to centuries of uncertainty. We don’t always see the answer at once, but God is moving. Just as Jesus is ruling the nations, He wants to rule in our hearts and lives.

Reflection:
• Are there areas of your life that feel uncertain right now?
• How does the light of an eternal kingdom bring you peace?
• How can you trust His quiet, steady work instead of your own strength?
⸻
Prayer:
Thank you for sending Your promised Son. When I feel unsure, remind me of the King and His eternal Kingdom. Help me rest in Your promises today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
