Today’s Devotional: Shepherds See The Light
Saturday, December 6

“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.’”
Luke 2:8-10

The shepherds were spending another cold, quiet night beneath the stars. There was nothing out of the ordinary. They had an unimportant job in a boring part of town. They had probably done this a million times. But in a moment, everything changed. Luke writes, “the glory of the Lord shone around them.” It was a light so brilliant that they were filled with fear.

The first light they saw was the light of glory. The brightness of Heaven was all around them. God’s glory is often revealed as a blinding light. We see this with Moses on the mountain and Paul on the road to Damascus. The angelic hosts announced the coming of the majestic King. The blinding light reminds us that God is holy and powerful. He can’t help but shine forth His glory.

The second light they experienced was the light of the Gospel. The angel told them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy.” These dirty shepherds needed good news as much anyone. The Messiah had finally come. This little baby would be the one to forgive sins and bring reconciliation between God and man. This was the good news the world had been waiting for.

The same light they feared, also brought warmth and joy to their hearts. God had come near. The glory of God had entered the world through a little baby.

Reflection:
• How have you experienced His light in your life?
• What is your response to hearing the good news that Jesus has come?

Prayer:
Father, thank You for shining Your light on the night Jesus was born. Help me to be like the humble shepherds, ready to worship you. Let the good news shine through me this Christmas. In Jesus’ name, amen.
